At Q Dental, we understand that many patients feel anxious about dental treatment.

To support nervous patients, we offer conscious sedation to help you feel completely relaxed and at ease during your visit. We use a safe and widely trusted method called IV (intravenous) sedation, which has helped many patients overcome dental anxiety and feel more comfortable receiving the care they need.

A calm and relaxed dental experience

IV sedation is administered through a small cannula placed into a vein. It begins to work within minutes, helping you feel deeply relaxed and calm throughout your treatment. Many patients describe a sense of ease and detachment from the procedure, while still being able to respond to instructions if needed.

Because you are so relaxed, treatment can often feel quicker, and your natural gag reflex is significantly reduced — allowing your dentist to work more comfortably and efficiently.

Benefits of dental sedation

  • Helps reduce dental anxiety and fear.
  • Promotes a deeply relaxed state during treatment.
  • Reduces gag reflex and discomfort.
  • Makes longer procedures feel shorter and more manageable.
  • Allows multiple treatments to be completed in one visit where appropriate.

FAQs

How does dental sedation work?

We use a sedative called Midazolam, which is commonly used in UK dental practices. Unlike general anaesthesia, you remain conscious and able to communicate with your dentist throughout the procedure.

The sedative simply helps you feel calm, relaxed, and less aware of the treatment taking place. There is also no sudden “comedown” — the effects wear off gradually and comfortably after treatment.

How long do the effects last?

The sedative is most effective during the first stage of treatment, and your clinician can adjust the level if needed to maintain comfort.

After the procedure, the effects wear off fairly quickly. However, it is normal to feel slightly drowsy for up to 24 hours, so patients are advised to rest and avoid driving during this time.

How long do the effects of the sedative last for?

The effects of sedation are strongest in the first 30 minutes. Your sedation dentist can then prolong the effects with micro-doses, if clinically necessary.

The sedative wears off quickly after your procedure has finished, but it’s completely normal to experience drowsiness for up to 24 hours afterwards.
